IDEA- First you need a new product or service to offer. If this is your first business I suggest you do something you either have experience with, love and have a passion for, or are willing to learn and do every day until you master it.
Ever since I was a kid I have always wanted to own my own business. I have always looked up to people that made it on their own and have always been interested in their story.
If you are looking to get out of the 9-5 job and start working for yourself there are a bunch of new apps that are enabling people to pay their bills performing various services. I encourage people to use these apps to generate income while they work on creating their own business. It will get you out of the grind or the funk you’re in. Give you extra time and flexibility and give you the freedom to work on whatever projects you want. Fiverr, handy, uber, lyft, washe, ect. There are new ones starting every day. Don’t plan on making much more than minimum wage but at least you are your own boss.
LET’S GET STARTED WITH YOUR OWN BUSINESS
Have you found the product or service you are going to offer?
TEST IT. Before you quit your job or invest your entire life savings into a new business idea make your first sale. If you are unable to sell your product or service before you invest, it probably won’t sell just because you have a new website, marketing platform, ect. Ask around your circle of family or friends and offer your service or product. If it is cleaning houses, pools, offices, cars ect. Selling a new lotion that you have created, selling a new innovative product ect. Even if the product doesn’t exist yet try to sell it.
One of the businesses I currently own I started selling the service before I had any equipment, experience, or licenses. What I did was I used the FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT STRATEGY. I told the customers that I didn’t have any availability for the next 4 weeks. This was true because I actually wasn’t available to perform the service I was offering. After acquiring a decent amount of new customers I realized there was a need for the business and I made the investment.
I have saved a lot of time, energy and money by testing my product or service before making a full investment in it. My favorite test is setting up a website with a free 30 day trial. Then I Use my knowledge of Google ads to see if there is anyone interested. After launching a Google ad for a few hundred $$ to see if I get any orders, or calls, or any interest at all I have an understanding of whether or not it’s a good idea or not.
AFTER THE SALE. Have you proved that your new product, service or strategy is going to bring in sales? Great! Now it’s time to get serious about it. At this point you should start telling everyone you talk to about your new product, service or idea. Don’t let people dissuade you from following your dream. There will be haters out there. There are haters for every business, just get used to people telling you no at this point. Chances are you’re not going to sell everyone on it. Don’t let this slow you down. Take all of the positive and negative feedback as free information to help you with your new business.
NAME YOUR BUSINESS. When I name a new business I start with Google. If you want to call your business “Andrew’s Podcast” I would recommend doing a Google search to see what your competition is. Once you have found a good relatable name check to see if the domain is available. I use Go Daddy to find my website domain names. Put “andrewspodcast.com” in the search and see if is available. Once you have found a name and website name don’t buy the domain just yet. Now search Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, ect. Do some research before you make any purchases. Once you have found a name, check with your county and make sure someone doesn’t own the name. This is typically found in the fictitious business name list.
AFTER YOU FIND YOUR BUSINESS NAME. Now it’s time to start claiming your name. I usually start with the website domain name. It shouldn’t cost much more than $10 to buy. I use Go Daddy to buy most of mine. Now that you own the domain start with the social media platforms. You want to claim the same name for all of them if possible. This is your brand now. It is important not to confuse people with various names and colors across all the different platforms.
APPLY FOR A BUSINESS LICENSE.
FILE YOUR NAME WITH THE CITY, COUNTY, COUNTRY, File for a fictitious business name, LLC, C corp, ect. This explanation will be described later.
BRAND YOUR BUSNINESS. Whether it’s the color scheme, logo, ect. You can change this in the future but you want the same theme across all of your platforms. Try not to confuse people.
BUILD A WEBSITE. This is much easier than you might think. I recommend starting with a website builder like Wix, GoDaddy, Shopify WordPress, Woocommerce, ect. All you really need is a home page to start. Put a couple pictures of your product or service, an explanation about yourself, what you offer and a contact form with your phone number and email. You can build the site up as your business grows but is is important to have a website and an easy way for people to contact you.
KEEP YOUR PERSONAL AND BUSINESS NUMBERS AND EMAILS SEPARATE
CREATE BUSINESS PAGES FOR ALL PLATFORMS POSSIBLE. This will get your name and website on the internet. You want your name and links to your business on as many other sites as possible. This will help with your SEO and get you recognized. We will walk you through all of them step by step instructions for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Yelp, Google my Business, Bing, LinkedIn, Angies List ect. Make sure you keep the same theme, logo or color scheme across all platforms to keep your brand recognizable.
ORDER BUSINESS CARDS. It seems silly to have paper products around in this day and age but they do come in handy. You can buy a 500 pack for $10 on vista print and I guarantee they will make you more than $10 in sales.
One of my business card tricks is sending a picture of my card to all of my customers so they can forward or share them with my friends. If you use GOOGLE PHOTOS it will have a better chance of staying saved so they don’t delete it when they delete their text messages.
FIND AN EXPERT IN YOUR FIELD. Reach out to as many people as possible that can help you fine tune your business. This is very important and can make or break a new business. Not only will you need other peoples help they may even send business your way. I email experts in my field of business across the US that have more experience than me. Not all of them respond but the ones that do give me information that has saved me thousands of dollars.
SELL SELL SELL
Sales are a crucial part of keeping a business successful. You should be selling your product, service, or idea throughout this entire process. Without sales you just have an expense and a hobby. Sales will fix all problems in the future so focus on SALES SALES SALES.
